The Road to University - Up until now... Part 1.

So I thought long and hard about what my first official blog post should be about... Should it be on what this page is about in more detail? About me? An engaging news article? An analysis? A review? After contemplating, for a few minutes, I came to the conclusion of reflecting upon my past few years and the journey that it's taken me on up till now first, before writing more blogs on these topics and individual productions too.

So here I start, it's 2011, decision time. What A-Levels should I take? Baring in mind I did well in all my GCSE's, I never was the one to have a keen interest with the compulsory subjects, I was always the more creative individual wanting to write, produce and create things; a masterpiece if you like (and yes Art was one of them).

As well as Art I opted to take English Language and Literature, Music Technology, and Media Production. During this experience I learnt a lot about each topic and the subcategories that existed in each field. After the first year of studying all four we were given the option to drop an A-Level to focus on our remaining subjects. As I knew the final year of A-Levels weren't going to be easy for me, knowing how much work and production all my creative subjects demanded, I chose to drop... English... that's right. It wasn't so much the reading and analysing that you had to do, it was just something I felt that would be more suited towards me in my own time, allowing me to read the books I wanted and explore wider reading at my own leisure. From my A-Level experience it was safe to say I had built up a repertoire of knowledge and skills, and still had passion for all three of them right up until applying to uni! By this time I'd visited several museums to inspire my own art work, recorded several bands in the studio, written, edited, designed, and produced several pieces of work from advertising campaigns to trailers to websites. And now came the hardest choice of what to do next?

University... So many choices... So many career paths... Safe to say I was scared and nervous knowing that the decision I made was one that could shape my future and career. I knew for a fact I wanted to study something media related as it had always been an interest of mine and loved every side to it. I also wanted to use my talent and knowledge of music and technical know-how too. Having explored possibilities and specialised fields such as journalism and other media specific studies, I was drawn to the radio sector. I felt this combined all my passions and would suit the background I had. So why didn't I study Radio Production? Well originally I applied for radio at Bucks University and University Centre Farnborough, until after submitting UCAS Bucks withdrew their course leaving me with only Farnborough. Having opted to stay at home and commute is a decision I'm still on the fence about for several reasons, but at the time not knowing what awaited seemed the best scenario.

So why didn't I study Radio you ask again? Well shortly after getting my results I was contacted by Farnborough with the news along the lines of "Hi Sean, unfortunately due to the number of applicants we aren't going to run this course next year, instead we can offer you a place on the Media Production one instead if you'd be interested?" Again another bit of unfortunate news I didn't want to hear but had no other option, so I agreed to knowing there'd be areas I wasn't that keen on studying; but after looking back it was apparent this was my path and this was where I was meant to be...
