So... I GOT IN!

So this post does feel a little weird to write considering the last blog post was about how tough it is to get into the industry, which is still very true and my opinion stands, and yet I'm sitting here having got a job working for TalkSPORT and Virgin Radio! This still feels like it isn't really happening but it is; so how you may ask? Well it's a bit of funny story this one... so lets begin!

It all started a few weeks back on my way to see one of my best friends on the train when the next thing I knew a young woman suddenly sat down next to me completely out of breath and turned towards me. So I took my headphones out and with that was asked if the train was heading towards Liverpool. After confirming it was we got talking about where I was going and soon led on to me talking about my degree and production work. After a good ten minutes or so she then said to me "I didn't know when I should tell you this but thought I'd let you know I actually work for TalkSport and Virgin Radio" I was taken back a little bit knowing I'd just spoken about the industry and my degree too and then she springs this on me! I was thinking this is crazy... well it obviously gets better! So after we spoke even more about my interests and passion for radio she then said there may be a potential position within the company and if I would send her my CV and see if she could pass it on. I remember leaving the train shortly after thinking how strange it was and just what might be the start of something.

About a week later I was at work when I received an email asking if I could have a quick chat on the phone with the Head of Activation at TalkSport and Virgin Radio; of course I agreed and after having a brief phone call I was offered an interview the following week! Again I thought to myself this is all a bit crazy and happening so quickly and it wouldn't be the last time either... So the day of the interview I turned up to the studios and offices in Hatfield, London. I knew that this was the one interview where I had to completely nail it and so the nerves soon settled in. The interview consisted of me discussing everything from my degree to where I currently work to my ambitions and future goals. I remember walking out of that interview knowing I gave everything I had and that even if I didn't get the job it would inspire me more to work within the industry knowing I have what it takes to work there.

So as you know I got the job! That evening in fact I was offered it! It really took a while for it to sink in that it all started from sitting on a train too. I look back at every factor thinking what if I got on a different train, or what it I put my headphones back in, or what if I didn't talk about my degree at all...

Like I said in my previous blog it's all about getting your foot in the door no matter what way; but I really didn't think it would've happened the way it did. I clearly impressed them with all my work I showcased during the interview as well as talking about the industry and their stations too and feel so honoured to be part of the company.

Having completed my first week as an Activation Assistant (transforming sold S&P deals into live radio pieces and executions across our social and digital platforms) it is still all a bit of a dream and I'm so excited to see where it takes me and all the projects I get to work on as well. The atmosphere is so amazing there at both studios across London and the team are such lovely people to work with as well and I think it will take a while to get use to the fact I work for such major radio stations in the UK.
